Could you please let us know your job title, the date when you started working in Deloitte and the city where you are based at?
I have joined Deloitte in January 2018 as a Strategy and Operations Consultant, and I am currently based in Alicante, Spain.
Can you please tell us briefly what your previous job was about? Did you make a significant career change on any of those?
Before coming to IE, I was working as a Digital Strategy, Analytics and E- Commerce Manager at Amstar DMC, a company from the Apple Leisure Group in Cancun, Mexico. Apple Leisure Group is a vertically integrated Travel and Hospitality conglomerate focused on packaged travel and resort/brand management in Mexico and the Caribbean.
As a Digital Strategy, Analytics and E-commerce Manager, I was in charge of developing a deep understanding of Amstar’s current and potential customer preferences and shopping behaviors. I was required to identify the most effective ways to reach and retain the customers through Digital Marketing channels. I defined the company’s Digital Marketing strategy and guided its execution across multiple digital channels, with the dual objective of growing their customer base and improving cost efficiency. When I joined Deloitte after IE, I made a triple jump by changing industry, function and location.
Can you please tell us briefly about your new job?
As a Strategy & Operations Consultant in Deloitte, my job is to help senior executives to solve their toughest and most complex problems by bringing an approach to executable strategy that combines deep industry knowledge, rigorous analysis and insight to enable confident action.
Has your personal career strategy always been focused on this job? How does this new job fit into your career strategy?
Initially, I was working as a Digital Marketing manager in the Tourism industry to develop my business skills further and to make a career shift towards Consulting, that’s why I decided to pursue an MBA.
Working at Deloitte enables me to further develop my problem-solving skills and gain new abilities in a competitive and fast-paced environment. The international environment at Deloitte also allows me to constantly learn more about new cultures henceforth giving me a well rounded multicultural experience. The newly acquired skills in the Consulting sector will help me to move back to a leadership position in the Tourism industry in some years.
How did you find out about this job opportunity? Where did you apply for the job?
I found out about this opportunity via the IE Career portal.
How did Talent & Careers and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process? Did you use specific career resources or did you come across useful information via an Advisor or Alumni?
IE Talent & Careers constantly helped me at every stage of the recruitment process. The multiple career sessions organized by the department helped me to improve my CV and cover letter. The sessions also provided me with the opportunity to understand the mindset of a hiring manager. Furthermore, these sessions made me a better manager as I learned a lot about myself and the importance of negotiating according to my talent.
Besides, IE Talent & Careers, IE Consulting Club helped me a lot to learn more about the specific details of the industry. The learnings from the Consulting Club also helped me with the technical interview as we extensively practiced several cases.
And finally, my learnings from the MBA and MBD programs helped me gain a holistic perspective about the industry and what to expect from my job. They also provided me with technical and business skills that are required to succeed in my present role.
How was the recruiting process?
It was a three stages process. The first stage required solving a business case. The second stage was focused on questions about technical skills and the knowledge of business analytics tools such as R, Tableau, etc. The final stage which was the HR round involved some questions about the cultural fit within the organization.
"...the most important thing is to network a lot during your time at IE. Make good friends, have an amazing time in Madrid, and figure out how consultants think and behave. Social skills are extremely valuable. Your fellow students at IE and Alumni can help you a lot with your present and your future challenges."
Would you want to share any tips or advice with students interested in applying to Deloitte? To your job position in particular?
In my opinion, the most important advice I would give to a student hoping to work with Deloitte in the future is to get the small things right. Acquire technical skills like knowledge of analytical software like R, Tableau, etc. These skills will help you differentiate yourself from the rest of the applicants.
Besides this, also spend a significant amount of time in solving business cases and understanding the methodology behind solving the common cases. IE Consulting Club and books like Case in Point can help you a lot in preparing for the same.
