David Fernández Lema graduated from the IE Master in Management (MIM) on July 2016, after which he joined the Madrid office of Altran Business Consulting (ABC) as a Business Analyst. At ABC, David uses his knowledge in Engineering, Economics and Financial Management to deliver valuable insights to clients. The following is the transcript of a conversation that David had with Career Ambassador and IE Master in Management 2017 Candidate Nishok Tressler:
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the company and your job?
A: My job in Altran Business Consulting, is to provide clients with tangible and fact-based recommendations by taking responsibility for a discrete section of the problem–solving exercise in each assignment. I analyze all the information that may be relevant to the client to give him the best possible solution to the specific task I am responsible for.
Altran Business Consulting started in 2012 as an alternative to the approaches set out by the traditional business consulting firms, applying a different approach to the companies’ problems in order to fulfill their present needs to succeed in coming years. ABC represents the strategic guidance of Altran Group, a global leader in innovation and high-tech engineering.
Altran Business Consulting is being led by Spain and is currently also present in France. We describe ourselves as a boutique type of consulting company, offering high–quality deliverables in order to completely fulfill our client needs while keeping a reduced number of highly professional workers.
Q: As we understand, you are a Business Analyst there. How did you find this job opportunity?
A: I used countless resources such as LinkedIn, Info Jobs, Trovit, Opportunity, Robert Walters, Page personnel, Hays, ProHireMe, human resources consulting companies and companies’ job portals to find a suitable job for me.
Finally, I got the most interesting offers and replies from the IE career portal, after having been searching for more than 2 months on a daily basis.
Q: How was your experience with IE Talent and Careers?
A: I have worked closely with Career Advisors at IE Talent and Careers: Silvia Dvorak and Mariola Díez, in order to find a job that could fulfil my expectations and ambitions.
Mariola and Silvia kept motivating me, giving me advice, offering their guidance throughout the complete process of finding the perfect job for me, not only with their knowledge but also with the resources needed to succeed in the interviews and processes of the different applications I made.
Q: How did your IE experience help your job prospects?
A: I have been given advice in every part of the process of Altran Business Consulting, and other processes I was involved in. The staff of the Talent and Careers not only helped me in improving my CV and adapting it to the offers I was applying for. They also helped me prepare some other processes I was involved, such as Banks, Startups or other relevant retail companies, by giving me tips and information about the kinds of questions to expect, the type of resources I needed to consider and what to prepare for the interviews.
Q: How was the recruiting process at Altran?
A: The recruiting process consisted of three interviews.
The first part of the required me to solve a case and present it to a group of 3 Business Analysts of Altran Business Consulting. In my case, I had to work with a colleague who was also from the IE Business School and prepare all materials in English. This part of the process lasted around 1.5 -2 h.
Then I had a second interview with an Associate of Altran Business Consulting where I was presented with another case to be solved in 1-1,5 h approximately. Additionally, we went over the information in my CV and I was asked some reasoning questions to evaluate my problem–solving skills. This part of the process lasted around 2-2.5 h.
The final interview was 1h long and was conducted by a Manager of Altran Business Consulting, by asking me questions in more detail about my CV and reasoning skills.
The complete process lasted approximately between 3 to 4 months.
Q: David’s pro-tips for students interested in applying to Altran:
A: One of the main benefits of working in Altran Business Consulting is the working environment; this aspect had a huge impact on me at the very beginning. In my opinion, it’s hard to find such a great working environment, where each of us is a team player, and doors are always open to doubts or ideas to improve the current ways of working. Also despite the hierarchy in the company structure, it is very feasible to share your doubts and ideas with anyone, from a fellow business analyst to the managing director.
What I would recommend to any student interested in applying to Altran Business Consulting is to be keen on consultancy. You have to be motivated in order to spend an important amount of time working to deliver the expected results. The work is very dynamic and you can learn from every different project you work on. Therefore, you need to be flexible, open minded and curious to continuously grow and develop your skills.
One of the key skills an Altran Business Consultant should have is to be analytic and be able to make statements based on facts rather than personal beliefs, applying the knowledge acquired.
Of course, the team members are ambitious, but the ambition comes from making the company bigger and from us growing with it. We seek to deliver better and faster results than the competitors in order to grow more and more every year.
If you are an analytic and hard-working team player that has the curiosity of a 3–year–old child in learning new things, then Altran Business Consulting is your company.
