Before pursuing the IE International MBA in 2016, Juan Gómez worked in Ferrovial, in its Airports division, which is in charge of the M&A activity in airports, and in the operation and management of these assets. Ferrovial is one of the world’s leading infrastructure operators and municipal services companies. The company has 74,000 employees and presence in over 15 countries. Juan participated in international projects in more than ten countries, developing business plans and providing the best possible passenger experience for those who passed through the airports the company operates. “I used to coordinate the areas of Opex, Capex and Environment during due diligence. I developed Business Plans for our airport portfolio and those the company was interested in. We analyzed international investment opportunities including North America, Latam, Europe and Asia” he explains. He wanted to make a change to a new sector. Juan finally moved to an IT company and faces a new challenge within the Travel industry, and will work hard finding the best solution for all the stakeholders involved in the travel experience. He recently started in Amadeus in their Travel Intelligence unit in Madrid as Bid Management Expert, and he has shared with us some insights to his job search and recruitment process.
Q: Can you please tell us briefly about your new job?
A: I will be part of the Amadeus Travel Intelligence unit, in the Solution Management area. My main responsibilities will be to
– Plan, produce and deliver solution design and proposal compliant with customer expectations
– Lead the design of non-standard proposals, endorsing the commitment of the solution group
– Coordinate with all technical stakeholders to get feasibility study, cost, and elapse plan assumption, and
– Define the solution pricing strategy.
Q: Has your personal career strategy always been focused on this job?
A: I was sure that one of my objectives with my MBA was to try to move to another sector. To be honest, Information Technology was not my first option. However, I took various courses in this area and my interest increased. So I finally decided to bet for it.
Q: How did you find out about this job opportunity?
A: I applied for another position in Amadeus and I was contacted by its recruiters to announce me that they were looking for people with less experience. Nevertheless, they send me the job description of another position that could be more interesting for me, and I began the recruiting process.
Q: How did Talent and Careers and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process? Did you use specific career resources or did you come across useful information via an advisor or alumni?
A: I first met Amadeus during a Company Presentation within the Talent Forum organized by IE Talent and Careers in April 2016. Since then, I had Amadeus in my radar to explore professional opportunities. I periodically searched for positions in Amadeus in Madrid in their website.
IE experience and the Career Fitness helped me in designing a strategy to look for a job. Sometimes, it can be a tough task, but it is important to talk to professors, career advisors and other students to find the best way for you to approach the job search.
Q: How was the recruiting process?
A: The recruiting process was divided in four interviews and three tests (one of them was an English test).
Two of the interviews were from HR department, and the other two were more related to the specific responsibilities of the position.
Q: Would you want to share any tips or advice with student interested in applying to Amadeus? To your job position in particular?
A: Do not hesitate to knock on different doors, talk to different people and be open to new challenges. Show your interest in working in an international environment, where customer-centricity, taking responsibility and looking for the excellence are the most remarkable values.
