Finally, after 5+ years of experience as a Doctor, not only performing functions as such but also by implementing strategic actions, analyzing patient data, redesigning protocols and levering on efficiencies in the hospitals where I worked, I decided to take the leap into healthcare strategy and consultancy. Now, with the help of IE as a platform, I have managed to secure an Internship in Healthcare Consulting at Frost & Sullivan, Dubai Office, a crucial first step that will help me shift my career in a new direction.
Having my passions initially rooted in the sciences and treatment, it wasn’t long before my focus shifted towards the commercial aspect of healthcare. Treatment will always be the core of the industry but it’s what we do now that will define the future of this sector, especially with so many network externalities, healthcare industry itself is an agglomeration of sectors within the economic system.
The experience of having a thought and converting it into reality was a daunting task but the help that IE through its Career Services provided me, after understanding what I had envisioned for myself in the future, surely palliated the task of achieving my short term goal by assisting me in preparing my CV, as to how my LinkedIn profile should look like, the companies that I should target and providing me with the insights about the healthcare industry from a recruiters perspective.
It has been a learning experience at IE Business School and the most important thing that I have learnt is, not to shy away from anything. One cannot predict but only work towards achieving your goals. This was exactly my mantra while searching for internship opportunities. Not only did I network on LinkedIn, Facebook and whatever social media platform is out there without worrying that I might end up making a fool out of myself but also spoke with IE Alumni in the healthcare sector and forwarded them my CV. I was religiously shameless while sending requests and trying to connect with unknown people from the industry and asking them to have a look at my CV or my LinkedIn profile. I eventually got a call from F & S. Instead of taking a traditional approach, I took a more direct approach while looking for internships, contacting people and asking if they could succor. The way F & S came ahead and showed interest in my profile even when there was no vacancy for internship and eventually creating one, literally shows their work culture and the ethics. Justifying the fact that F & S is a forward looking company and always on a look out for new talent.
The Vice President of Healthcare and life Sciences, with whom I had initially connected on LinkedIn, got me through to HR, starting the whole process of the two rounds of interviews over a period of 3 months, ending successfully with a translation of my motivations.
