Pietro Comito graduated from the IE International MBA (IMBA) on April’16. He is Italian, and before the MBA, he worked 5+ years in one of the most important energy companies in Europe -Enel Group- at their HQ in Rome, as Marketing and Business Development Manager. In July, he joined Bain & Company as Strategic Consultant, in Milan. He explains that for him “this new job opportunity is a radical change; in fact I changed industry, job-position and, at the same time, how to work and interact with people/clients. Surely, it is a great and challenging adventure!” Congratulations Pietro on your success!
Can you please tell us very briefly about the job/company/industry?
I’m working for Bain & Company, one of the world’s leading management consulting firms. We work with top executives to help them make better decisions, convert those decisions into actions and deliver the sustainable success they desire. For more than 40 years, Bain & Company has been passionate about achieving better results for our clients—results that go beyond financials and are uniquely tailored, pragmatic, holistic and enduring.
How did you find out about this job opportunity?
Participating in various meetings/events/company presentations with my colleagues of the IE Consulting Club, I became interested in the world of consulting. So, after some research on the internet (web site, consulting forum and LinkedIn), I decided to apply directly through the Bain & Company website.
How did the Career Management Center (CMC) and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process?
From the first moment of my applications, the CMC helped me prepare for interviews in different ways: one to one meeting, crack the case events, consulting presentations and other valuable resources on the IE Career Portal. In addition to that, Margarida Constantino and Ana Olaguibel gave me a specific and useful consulting opportunity: I had the possibility to sign up for consulting mock interviews with experts from PrepLounge, a case interview community where candidates with similar career goals get connected, practice cases and sharpen their consulting skills.
How was the recruiting process: stages, tests, interviews, etc.?
The first step of the process was an online application, as usual, with CV details and cover letter screening. After passing this stage, there were two case interviews with Principal and/or Manager. The third step was two more interviews with Partners. The final round was an interview with the Head of Human Resources. Each stage required that you have passed the previous one and an offer is made once you have passed all these stages. The interview structure was in the “classic” consulting style: about 20 minutes for the “fit questions” and the remaining 40 minutes for the business case. The final part was reserved for any questions you have for the interviewer about the company and his/her professional career.
Would you want to share any tips, advice with current student interested in applying to Bain?
- Be proactive! Probably the most important suggestion is to be proactive from the beginning of the IMBA and not to wait for the last months. Practice on cases, attend events, meet people of the industry are just a few of the key elements that are crucial to the success.
- Be prepared! This aspect is extremely important. Make sure you come very prepared to the interviews. This means.. practice, practice, practice!!! In addition, It’s also relevant to understand very well the interview process and the various evaluation criteria.
- Be passionate! Show in every single moment of your interviews that you are really interested in Bain. Passion, commitment and being authentic are other fundamental key factors in order to pass the long and challenging selection process.
