Mauro Rafaelli Castilhos, Master in Management 2015 Alumni, currently works for IBM.
How did you find out about this job opportunity?
In the last 3 months before graduation I was looking for job opportunities in several places: CMC Career web site, CMC e-mails, talking to professor, friends, Linkedin, companies’ web site and infojobs. This opportunity to IBM reached me in one of the several CMC e-mails with job opportunities.
How did the CMC and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process?
The CMC team helped me a lot since my first day of class. I was always going there to talk to different advisors inside the department to help me with Curriculum, Cover letter, interview process, recommendation and to help me to understand the way they do interviews in Europe. Coming from Latin America you need to adapt also to the different approach the companies’ uses during interviews. I don’t have words to thanks also the help of all the team and specially Margarida Constantino and her wise advices.
Also the IE experience helps you a lot during the recruiting process, it prepares you to everything. Before going to the process I had the opportunity to talk to some teachers that gave me some advices about what were the new projects develop by IBM Spain.
How was the recruiting process: stages, tests, interviews, etc?
The e-mail that I received from CMC was informing one contact in IBM to send our Curriculum directly. After few weeks I received one e-mail confirming that my curriculum was approved and I pass to the second stage that was the English computer test and the math computer test. I had some minutes to do both exams at home, they were so far the hard exams I made in the past year. The time was really short and the math questions where really to think out of the box. The good is that you receive your grade just after you finish the exams.
After a month I received the invitation to go for a full day of interviews. They didn’t informed me previously what was about this day. Without knowing what to expect I prepared myself to everything. When I arrived there I was a little surprised with the amount of people, we were in around 50 people. IBM team treat us perfectly since the beginning. We went to an auditorium to watch a presentation of around 1 hour. During this presentation we had the opportunity to listen to several directors speaking about the company (Human resources, Consulting) and also 2 IBM employees that enter to the company in the last year. We also watched some videos and we had the opportunity to ask some questions to the IBM team.
After this first stage we were divided in groups of 7 and we passed through several stages. First we had a case study in English, we had 20 minutes to prepare and we presented in 10 minutes alone to 2 IBM directors. While I was presenting they were making some questions. After this first stage we passed to an assessment center in groups of 7, this was in Spanish, we need to present ourselves to 2 directors of human resources and after this we had 30 minutes to decide between several projects which one we are going to choose to develop and present to the team observing us.
We had a break for lunch and after this they informed the ones that were passing for the third stage of interviews, only 8 people were selected. This third phase was based in 30 minutes interview with directors asking about your experience and some small questions about how I would solve particular problems if I start to work for IBM. After 3 weeks the IBM team called me to say that I was approved and they informed me all my grades for each stage and my high points and the points I need to develop to the future.
Would you want to share any tips, advice with current student interested in applying to this company?
For students intending to apply to IBM I would say to be really good prepared to the computer exam. You can try to find information online. By far is one of the most difficult exam I had in the past year. Do it with calm because you will need it.
For the interviews in the company I would say to read a lot about technology and what the new trends are for the future. Also try to read a little about the company to fill more secure. And last is to use the knowledge that you learned in IE, case problem presentations, working in groups and how to present an idea with consistency. And don’t forget to ask for help in the CMC, they are there to help you.
