Sergey Gorbatov, alum of the International MBA class of 2011 and currently Manager Executive Development at Philip Morris International in Switzerland tells how he managed to enter this leading global company:
- How did you find out about this job opportunity?
I was contacted directly by recruiters at Phillip Morris International (PMI), so, in a way, the opportunity found me. I graduated at the end of May 2011, and they contacted me the first week of June, so the timing was perfect.
- How did the CMC and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process?
I had several meetings with my Career Advisor and the Career Management Center (CMC) Executive Director, who managed the relationship with PMI at that point in time. So, when the right opportunity came along, they forwarded my CV to the recruiters and I was selected for the interviews.
- How was the recruiting process: stages, tests, interviews, etc.?
It was a series of interviews with the hiring manager and several other senior PMI leaders. The first interview was a standard 2-hour competency-based one, a few functional interviews, and the interviews with the VPs felt more of a culture-fit conversations. For those I was invited to come to the Operations Center offices in Lausanne in Switzerland. Overall, I had 6 interviews to go through.
- Would you like to share any tips, advice with future IMBA students interested in applying to Philip Morris?
Ask many questions. Ask for a lunch or a coffee with a current employee in a team that you intend to join. Be prepared for difficult questions from your friends and family to justify your choice of an industry.
