Ricardo Marquez, IMBA alum of 2014, talks about entering the Citizen Challenge at Citi
- How did you find out about this job opportunity?
I received an email from the IE Career Management Centre about the job opportunity.
- How did the CMC and your IE experience help you during the recruiting process?
The Career Management Center (CMC) and my IE experience helped me in many ways: In the case of CMC everything started early on by going to Carlos Diez’s drop-in session, where he gave me advice on how to move into the Banking industry and how to refine my CV. Once I was selected for the Citibank Citizen Challenge recruitment process, I contacted CMC to see if they could give me any advice and they gave me the names of IE alumni currently in Citibank and recommendations regarding the recruiting process.
Regarding the IE experience, without a doubt I can say that everything I experienced at IE helped me, from the technical knowledge I learnt in the classes to the advice I received from my classmates about the recruitment process. However, in my case I think that the experiences I obtained from workgroup meetings were crucial in differentiating me from the rest of the applicants.
- How was the recruiting process: stages, tests, interviews, etc.?
The recruitment process was divided into three stages: Application, Web Interview and Citizen Challenge.
Application: Like most application processes it consisted of filling in the application form, sending your CV and a Cover Letter.
Web Interview: A standardized video interview with 5 questions touching on how you manage challenges, failures and your reasons for applying to the program.
Citizen Challenge: once you pass the previous stages you are sent to Miami to participate in a Simulation/Networking event. This event consisted in two things: 1. Networking with Citi senior management and candidates and 2. A group project management simulation.
- Would you like to share any tips with future IMBA students interested in applying to Citi?
Come prepared for the Citizen Challenge; study all the materials they give you and bring your notes to the simulation. Investigate the current challenges in the banking industry and find out how your background and IE experience can help Citi confront those challenges. Finally find a way to differentiate yourself from the other applicants and take advantage of the fact that during your MBA you worked with more than 30 nationalities because that is something that almost no other top MBA program provides.
