Last Thursday December 12, 8 representatives from J&J came on campus to share with our new IMBA Nov 2013 intake a corporate presentation as well as their Summer Internships opportunities. We were glad to see some of the J&J reps that came to campus are also IE alumni!
Presentations highlighted the importance of knowing your passion and understanding the company’s purpose and culture, so you can find the best fit in a job that will help you drive your career success. In this sense, the J&J Credo, established in 1943 contains not only the recipe for the success of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, but it is also a perfect summary of what is valued at this company. Some of the values that are included in the Credo are the care for customers and the drive to succeed. Every decision they make at J&J is based on the impact they have on the customers, employees, communities and stockholders and evaluated accordingly. Of course they also have the responsibility of growing the business in a way that’s visible in their financial results.
Possibilities to network and develop a career
Apart from the different career paths they have at J&J there is something they informally call stretch assignments, which is basically volunteer work in different fields and projects within the company, such as innovation or social responsibility. These are also opportunities to network with all kinds of employees including senior management.
Skills and abilities to go anywhere in the company
It seems pretty normal to move across organizations and teams inside Johnson & Johnson; a characteristic that is attractive to many young professionals that attended the event. Having asked what are the skills and abilities that they have developed that helped them move around different projects and even sectors within the company, the top managers in the room answered:
- Being open to learn
- Understand the common goal and work with the team: working in matrix and responding to different countries
- There are other skills that you didn’t know you possessed and you discover in the way.
IRDP Career opportunities are limitless
The Career Development Program has over 25 years of success in bringing new leaders to the business in emerging markets. This means that at this point many of the senior managers have gone through it.
Blair Beavis, Regional University Recruitment Manager, EMEA at Johnson & Johnson observed that J&J is a very lean organization with small teams that lets you take on responsibilities as part of the Development Program, where you develop a specific objective and have follow-up meetings and support from senior managers.
