A full week long, companies presented themselves to the IE student community, and we had the chance to introduce ourselves to them. I was wondering how others perceived the IE career fair and what people could achieve.
First of all, it was good to see that the overall level of professionalism by students was high. Most students were well prepared. They had thought about themselves and read about the companies beforehand. One of the best practices observed was to come not only with your CV but with print-outs of program descriptions and open positions. That way it was possible to ask very specific questions about the fit for a certain role. It was valuable to find out which were – out of the long list of requirements – the important ones. As a consequence, those who did so could also check whether the information in their CV was relevant for that particular job and adjust it accordingly. I would assume that the applications that are sent directly to somebody who already confirmed that your profile fits the requirements naturally have a much higher chance of getting to the next round.
I was also told several stories of students who managed to get the country representatives to forward the students’ CVs internally with a recommendation based on the good impression from the interaction at the booth. Another student managed to get the name of another employee in the company working in her target position. She is now in touch with that person through LinkedIn. Some company representatives stood out by not only providing contacts but also giving tailored individual advice on internal positions that would fit the student’s profile. This kind of interaction was extremely appreciated.
It is too early to measure tangible results. But there is a clear indication that some people have already gotten a lot further than they would have, had they just applied through a webpage. We will need to see in a couple of months again what the real outcome was. If you have a success story to share, please let me know!
Quick reminder at the end:
- Have you connected with all the people on LinkedIn yet?
- Have you written a short thank you note to the people you had a good talk with?
- Have you set a reminder on when to follow up with whom?
